YOUR GUIDE ON HOW TO DESIGN THE PERFECT HOME OFFFICE

LOCATION

First, you need to decide on a location. If you have an unused guest bedroom, turn it into a dedicated home office. Even an unused corner in the family room or a balcony with a view will suffice. Think creatively, but keep functionality in mind. Sitting in a noisy room at work with your TV tuned to a loud reality show can seriously affect your productivity.

PRIVACY

We've all been there and tried to make sense of work calls over house noise. This can be annoying, so it makes sense to physically separate your home office. You're lucky if you have a sturdy door as it gives you the privacy and quietness you need. If that is not possible, simple room dividers will also work. It provides at least the visual privacy you need if not much curtains also help separate the study from the rest of the house

STORAGE SPACE

Storage space depends entirely on the type of work you do at home. Make sure you have enough storage space right next to your desk so you don't have to go in and out of the room for important notes and tools while you work. For example, you can have a tab to keep your paper, files, pens, and pencils so they don't roll around everywhere. If you have confidential documents that you don't want children or dogs to disrupt, invest in a lockable storage cabinet. If you have a small floor space, think vertically. Floating shelves and wall units can help.

COMFORT

If you plan to work from home for long hours, comfort should be a priority. Sitting in a straight-backed dining chair for hours can sooner or later lead to serious back problems. Get a quality desk and ergonomically designed chair. Ideally, a chair should have good lumbar support, adjustable back and seat heights, and a swivel base. If you can't work comfortably at your desk, your productivity will inevitably suffer.

LIGHTING

Having the right amount of light in your room can significantly reduce eye strain. Therefore, natural light is always best while working. Place your desk near a window that lets in plenty of natural light and fresh air. If that's not possible, place a dim task light above your monitor or desk. An evenly spread white light is always perfect for your workspace.

GREENERY

Foliage plants brighten up any room with fresh colors. Whether you choose a tall potted palm or a small tabletop bonsai, any plant will work well and add a tropical touch to your workspace. Personalize the area and make it as warm as you like.

ORGANIZER

There are inevitably many wires and cables in every office space. Get a cable manager and use a cable management system. Tie loose ends or use cord covers to organize them. Use safe and secure multi-plug extensions when necessary. Place your WiFi where you can get a stable connection so you can work smoothly without interruptions.

ACCENT WALL

If the walls around your workspace are dull or dark, it's time to brighten them up. Paint with solid white, pastels, or any other color you like. You can even go one step further and use a gradient wall, a color-blocked wall, or just wallpaper. If you don't have the budget or resources, add a frame with an inspirational painting, photo, or quote I can do it. Make sure the wallpaper and colors you choose aren't too distracting.

ALTERNATE SEATING

Working long hours at the same desk and chair can be very tiring. One way to avoid this monotony is to have alternative seating arrangements that emphasize comfort. It can be an accent chair, a beanbag chair, a floor pillow, or a plain old sofa. The first few hours of your desk job may not seem so mundane, but over time your mind and body will crave change. This is when you can switch to a comfortable seat and work there instead. Please do not use it for a long time as it may cause poor posture. Just use it for about 20 minutes and go back to your desk.
