TIPS ON HOW TO DESIGN YOUR DOUBLE HEIGHT LIVING ROOM

1. INSTALL TALL WINDOWS

Tall windows or large glass panels can flood your living room with natural light, bring the view outside and create the illusion of a larger space. Use a neutral color to further increase the height of the space.

2. CREATE A FOCAL POINT

Turn double height living room walls into an accent feature by decorating them with murals, wallpaper, textured paint, 3D wall panels or stone cladding. Rather than a collection of artwork, choose a specific piece and display it at eye level. Alternatively, consider using artwork, photographs and prints with a similar theme for a cohesive look. If the living room has a staircase, do not forget to incorporate its design into the decoration of the living room.

3. INSTALL STATEMENT CHANDELIER

An oversized chandelier or sculptural light fixture is a must for a double-height living room. They draw the eye up, fill vertical space and add a lot of personality!

4. CHOOSE LAYERED LIGHTING

Arrange the light fixtures at different levels of the living room. This will prevent shadows or dark spots in the space. Use floor lamps and install ceiling lights or track lighting to focus on different decorative elements in the room. Include tall mirrors as a design element as they add brightness by reflecting artificial and natural light.

5. BRING UP THE HEAT

A double-height living room risks looking cold and uninviting. Bring warmth to the decor with wooden furniture and the integration of natural stone or wood into wall or floor coverings or through other decorative elements. Upholstered surfaces can add softness to a space. Also introduce color accents through soft furnishings such as cushion covers or a rug.

6. ADD STORAGE

The best thing about double height walls is that they allow for additional storage in the form of closed cupboards, open shelves or floating wooden shelves. Avoid open shelves above six feet as they are difficult to keep clean.

7. ADD TALL PLANTS TO THE DECOR

Tall plants breathe life into a double-height living room. They add color, texture and look proportional to the vertical dimensions of the space.

8. CEILING HEIGHT

The best advantage of double living rooms is their ceiling height. It is normally 9 to 11 feet tall and in some cases more. So such splendor must be fully exploited. To create an impressive space, define a focal point and highlight it enough to make it attractive. Installing a chandelier is a good and easy way to achieve this. Depending on the interior style of your home, you can choose between a classic elegant design and a completely ornamental one.

9. BALCONY RAILINGS

Designing a living room is not limited to decorating this particular space. In fact, you should pay attention to the surrounding areas as well. In almost every double-height living room, you will find an interior balcony with a railing as a load-bearing barrier. This creates a perfect transitional space between public and private spaces in the house. So the railing should be designed with the materials and textures used in the living room in mind.
