HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT TYPE OF MATERIAL FOR YOUR CARPET

Wool and nylon fibers are the most durable of the five basic groups. the type of fiber used determines the performance and appearance of the carpet. the fiber content is usually listed on the spec sheet on the back of the product.

WOOL

Wool is the standard in luxury and performance beautiful it is softer than synthetic, very durable and has excellent stain resistance, but it is not cheap.

NYLON

Nylon follows wool in terms of durability and feel, but the price is more in the middle. it has excellent stain resistance, color fastness and flexibility. some newer products have greater damage and stain resistance. others have carbon-composite nylon filaments woven into the yarn to absorb shocks. some of these reinforced nylons are as much as wool.

OLEFIN OR POLYPROPYLENE

Olefin is both durable and water and stain resista nt making it ideal for indoor/outdoor carpets as well as commercial areas. it is best used on low-level carpets, as it is less elastic than nylon; otherwise it may clump or break.

POLYESTER

Polyester is known for its softness or texture, especially when used in luxury terry products. it has good color retention and stain resistance, but is not as elastic as nylon. Acrylic has the advantages of wool, but at a lower price. however, since the fibers tend to swell and pill, they are not often found in large carpets. this moisture and mildew resistant fiber is used in carpets.
