A GUIDE ON CHOOSING THE RIGHT ART FOR YOUR HOME INTERIORS

1. DECIDE ON THE RIGHT LOCATION

The right location for your artwork is one that adds value to the room rather than making it feel like a burden in the corner. It should have visual accessibility and the right amount of light. You also need to determine the correct orientation based on the wall you choose to place.

2. CONTRASTING OR COMLIMENTARY

Works of art should complement and blend the décor and color scheme, or be completely contrasting to stand out. For example, a white-dominated room might have black-and-white paintings, or bright oranges and reds. However, a room dominated by pinks and purples may not want to use red artwork.

3. THE RIGHT SIZE

Just as clothes that are too baggy or too tight can look unsightly, wrong-sized artwork can take away the beauty of a room and the artwork itself. It's a good idea to measure your walls before you go looking for art. It's also important to measure the dimensions on or around the furniture (sofa or console) and make sure the piece is no larger than 2/3 the size of the furniture.

4. SHOW YOUR PERSONALITY

As mentioned before, the art you choose will largely determine your personality and taste. So it's best to choose something personal and something that defines who you are, what you believe in, and how you see the world. It could be a window into your desires, inner motivations or something you are actively promoting.

5. LIGHTING CONSIDERATIONS

Keep the artwork away from natural light as colors may fade over time. If you have a bright room you want to buy a painting for, consider inexpensive, fade-resistant prints. For sculptures, try placing multiple light sources around them. When the light comes from a different direction, the shapes and details are more visible from different angles.”

6. FRAME

Select a dominant color in the artwork to match the frame, or choose a contrasting color to make the artwork stand out. Artwork and frames should always complement each other. A good rule to keep in mind is to hang your paintings or photos so that the midpoint is between 1.5 m and 1.6 m from the floor.
