A FEW OF THE BENEFITS OF USING RUGS IN HOME INTEIORS

Area rugs are a common addition to hard surface flooring such as hardwood, laminate or tile. It can even be laid on a wall-to-wall carpet. There are many reasons why carpets are so popular, yet some people may be unsure if they should cover their beautiful floors with carpet.

Perhaps the most obvious reason to have an area rug is its appearance. Area rugs have a unique way of bringing all the elements of a room together. For example, they can combine different colors used in the decor.

But the benefits of area rugs go far beyond style. If you're not sure if an area rug is right for your space, then read on to learn how area rugs can really enhance a space.

SOUND PROOF

An area rug will significantly reduce the noise in your space. Carpet is not only quieter to walk on than a hard surface floor, but it also absorbs sound from the air. Have you noticed that your room has a slight echo? This is because a hard surface floor does not absorb sound in the same way as a carpet. Lay down an area rug and hear the difference.

AMENITY

It's no secret that carpet is much softer than hardwood or tile, and most people will agree that carpet is more comfortable to stand on than hard floors. Not only does the rug feel softer to the touch on your skin, but its softness also gives it a bounce that allows the rug to absorb some of the impact of your steps. This literally takes some of the pressure off your body.

HEAT

In addition to being softer, carpet is warmer than a hard surface floor. It has more insulating value, especially if it has a carpet underlay. This applies throughout the house, but is especially welcome in basements where the floor can be downright cold.

WHOLENESS

Many people intuitively know that an area rug helps a space feel grounded, even if they don't know how or why. There are actually several reasons for this.

The first is that when placed correctly, an area rug can help anchor the furniture in a room, helping to create a cozy, intimate space. For example, a living room or family room rug should be large enough that all the main pieces of furniture (sofa, armchair, chairs, and coffee table) sit on the rug, or at least have the front legs on the rug. Without a carpet, it may seem that the furniture in the room is "floating".

The second reason rugs help ground space is that they provide a resting place for both the body and energy. If you subscribe to feng shui or similar beliefs, or even if you just have an intuitive sense, an area rug will slow down the energy that flows through the home. Energy travels quickly over hard surfaces and more slowly over soft surfaces. Fast-flowing energy can create feelings of excitement or anxiety, so when there is nothing to slow down the flow of energy, the space can feel a bit chaotic. An area rug brings a sense of calm to space by slowing down energy.
